Hi Everyone! My name is Elizabeth Rice. I am 19 years old. I am a sophomore at IUPUI. I graduated from Greenwood Community High School in 2009. I was in the Greenwood marching band, and I am a two time state marching champ. My major at IUPUI is elementary education with a dual license in special education. I am thinking about minoring in History because I love history. I love kids. I work at the YMCA Before and After School Program. I get paid to play games with kids. This summer I will be returning to the YMCA day camp as a camp counselor. I will be working with six and seven year olds which is who I want to work with later on in life. I just got engaged to my boyfriend of two and a half years.
As I was setting up my blog I found that it was easy to create after I did some exploring. I had no idea before today how to set up a blog so I just explored the site. I am still editing my blog, but I think that it looks good for now.

Hi Elizabeth! I have to say, after reading everyone's blogs, I'm very impressed with so many of you knowing exactly what you want to do after high school. My Oncourse profile says I'm still trying to decide what I want to be when I grow up and I'm 50 years old, lol. The ironic part is I was very adamant about not wanting to be a music teacher when I was a performance major in college the first time. (You know, something to fall back on). Last year I retired from teaching private piano lessons for the past 11 years, 4 years ago I started working at the high school as an aide for an autistic student, and now I teach pre-algebra to students with learning disabilities. I'm not sure why I thought I didn't want to teach.
ReplyDeleteDo you have a specific area of special education you're interested in? There is absolutely nothing better than going to play everyday. And to get paid doing it...even better!
Do you just love working at the YMCA? Something like that would be my ideal summer job; I'm still looking for work, and it definitely sucks. So..6 and 7 year olds..is that 1st grade? I'm thinking I would like to teach third or fourth, though I've heard that new teachers just kind of take whatever they can get. lol
ReplyDeleteIn one of my classes last semester, we had a speaker that came in to talk to us about special education. She commented that in the future, it will almost be a requirement that all teachers have some training on special ed, so you're definitely taking a smart path! I'm jealous of your talent :)
To Christine-- I don't have a specific area I want to work with yet. At the YMCA I work with a kid with aspergers (I think that is how you spell it) and it is a challenge, but it is very rewarding.
ReplyDeleteTo Taylor-- Yeah I definetly love working at the YMCA. Sometimes it is hard, but being around kids seems to just make things better. I plan on working with kindergarten or first. I wanted to work with third through fifth, but after being at the YMCA I find that older kids have attitude problems and are kind of mean. My kindergarteners and first graders are pretty much the bombs. They say the funniest things and are pretty much adorable.
Thanks Elizabeth - I would say that loving to be with kids is helpful as a teacher. It is a great start! It also helps to be very interested in how they learn and grow. Playing is so important and this type of work does help SO much with getting comfortable being with kids in their sphere!
ReplyDeleteThe YMCA job sounds perfect for you and it will be a great experience later on when you’re a teacher. I to am going to be an elementary teacher, but I’m hoping to work with slightly older kids then you. Congratulations on getting engaged.
ReplyDeleteElizabeth, thats awesome that you want to do special education! I did peer tutoring in high school where I was an aid to one of the special ed teachers and I absolutely loved it! Also, your job at the YMCA sounds like a blast! I'm sure it will be a great experience for teaching! Congratulations on getting engaged!! Have you set a date yet?! One of my really good friends just got engaged in March and is having the wedding this August!
ReplyDeleteNo date yet. We are trying to get settled into our apartment and he is trying to graduate from college. But we are thinking sometime late next year.
